a solidary world

In collaboration with: Dawit Isaak-library and Galleri Måsen

Guests: Maria Cohut, Shi Tou & Mingming
What does solidarity look like in a society? What does intergenerational solidarity look like, or solidarity among young people? What concrete changes in how a nation understands solidarity do we see around us today? And what forms of solidarity do we show each other in the face of political or ecological transformations?
How much do the various groups and institutions active in the field of human rights in Malmö communicate with one another?
Members of the network UNICORN artists in solidarity and their guests will ask and discuss these and other similar questions in the exhibition and events a solidary world. Through works of art that the artists will activate in various public interventions, a poetry reading and various debates, we aim to continue a dialogue on questions that Dawit-Isaak-biblioteket and many different groups ask themselves, often in isolation.
The project is financed by Kulturrådet.
Fragile Decisions: A performance workshop on contemporary strategies of censroship and solidarity

Who: UNICORN Artists in Solidarity and the workshop participants
Where: in the main exhibition space at Malmö Konsthall
When: Wednesday, october 16 (part of the Forbidden Culture Week)
Duration: 17:00 – 19:00
IMPORTANT:
For each person participating in the workshop: bring a piece of soft material (fabric, paper, plastic, string, etc.) that is important for you as a personal symbol of social struggles. We will use this material during the performative workshop, as well as to build a collective object with it at the end: so make sure you bring something that is personal but that you can part with. Thank you!
During Forbidden Culture Week UNICORN Artists in solidarity propose a participatory performance workshop open to everyone who is interested in strategies of social and political performance. The performance workshop will consist of dialogic and material interventions in connection to Lenke Rothman’s work “Life as Cloth”, asking what are a cultural institution’s limits and possibilities to understand, listen and relate to an artist’s political engagement (or disengagement), and how do contemporary censorship and contemporary institutional solidarity function in the art world.
UNICORN invites cultural workers and institutional representatives from Skåne and the general public to take active part in a performative, partially scripted dialogue: between institutions and artists, between materials and words, between the past and the future.
The workshop will be in English.
UNICORN Artists in Solidarity is a network of cultural workers, artists and researchers based in Sweden. Its current active members are Jinyan Zeng, Hanna Una Holmquist, Ramona Dima, Samaneh Roghani, Simona Dumitriu, Susanne Ovelius and Taylor Filrup Eliasen.

We are happy to announce that our next artists in residence, film makers, story tellers and performers MingMing and Shi Tou have arrived in Sweden from China for a residency of six months, made possible by amazing partnerships and support. October-December 2023 will be spent by the artists under the generous and warm hearted roofs of Konstepidemin, as they will get to know Gothenburg and its vibrant art scene. From late December until March 2024 they will grace our lovely hometown, Malmö, where Malmö Konsthall will be their amazing host, with the generous support of IASPIS Konstnärsnämnden. Thank you Malmö Konsthall, IASPIS, Konstepidemin and Perpetuum Mobile for making this possible.
As part of the residency, UNICORN and Malmö Konsthall will host a talk with the artists on November 23, from 18:30 at Malmö Konsthall: “Queer home-making: Shitou and Mingming in dialogue with UNICORN”. More details on the event page.
